How to Study for the Canadian Citizenship Test
Follow five simple steps: learn the format, read the official guide, practise by topic, and walk into your test ready to pass.
Step 1: Know the test format
The Canadian citizenship test has 20 questions, in multiple choice and true or false format. You need 15 of 20 correct (75%) to pass. There is no separate mandatory section: the 75% overall mark is the only pass rule.
Most applicants take the test online with a 45 minute time limit. The test is required for applicants aged 18 to 54, and every question comes from the official guide Discover Canada.
Before you open a book, take one practice test. Your score shows how far you are from the 75% pass mark, and which topics need the most work.
Step 2: Read Discover Canada, one chapter at a time
Discover Canada is the official study guide, and every test question is based on it. Do not try to read it in one sitting. Read one chapter a day and note the names, dates and facts that stand out.
You can read the full guide free on this site. Our free study guide is a complete study course that covers all 7 test sections: rights and responsibilities, history, government, geography, economy, symbols and Canadian values.
Read the free study guideStep 3: Practise by category to find weak topics
After each chapter, test yourself on that topic. Category practice shows exactly where you lose marks. Most people are strong on symbols and geography but weaker on history and government.
Our 14 free practice tests cover all 280 questions across the 7 categories, with answers and explanations. The app groups the same questions by category, so you can drill one topic at a time.
Step 4: Take timed mock exams
Knowing the material is half the job. The other half is answering 20 questions against a clock. Timed mock exams build the pace and confidence you need for test day.
The app includes 16 timed mock exams scored exactly like the real test, with the same 75% pass mark. Take at least one mock exam per study session, and keep going until you pass three in a row.
Step 5: Focus your final week on weak areas
In the last week before your test, stop re-reading chapters you already know. Spend your time on the questions you got wrong.
The app tracks every score and re-serves the questions you missed, so your final week targets your actual weak spots instead of guesswork. Finish with one last mock exam the day before your test.
Study on the go
The app puts this whole plan in your pocket: all 280 questions, 16 timed mock exams, score tracking, and the full study course free in 13 languages. Download free on iOS and Android.
